London : N. Trübner & Co., 1888.
STORE 193:28

This is seen as the first textbook on anatomy to be published in English. The exact date and author are unclear but it has been attributed to Thomas Vicary and the date of publication given as 1548. The copy shown here is a later reprint of the 1577 version. Vicary was an important figure in the Company of Barber-Surgeons of London and was royal surgeon to a number of kings and queens. He also takes centre stage in Hans Holbein’s painting showing Henry VIII handing the charter of the Act of Union between the Barbers and Surgeons of London to him.
