The botanist Louisa Lane Clarke (1812-1883) produced a number of books on the microscope, the plants of the Channel Islands, and common seaweeds along the British and Channel Island coasts. Several of these enjoyed great success and went through numerous editions. In this volume, Clarke gave advice on the practical management of the microscope, intended for new owners of the instrument, as well as on the purchase and mounting of slides. The growing availability of microscopes is also revealed, as Clarke explained how an efficient instrument, perhaps a ‘student’s microscope,’ could be purchased at what she considered a modest price of around £3 3s. to £5 5s.
