Spaces to Study
Welcome to the Whipple Library
You will enter the Library on Level 2 where you will find the Enquiry Desk and our friendly Library team, who are always happy to help. Here, you can borrow and return books, consult our iDiscover catalogue terminal, and browse our free books trolley. This floor is also the home of our printer/scanner machine, our short-term loan (reserve) collection, and our sample work and theses.
Downstairs
Level 1 and the Old Library contain a variety of workspaces, from group desk spaces, to soft seating and bean bags. Look out for the museum objects displayed between the shelves throughout the Library!
Level 1
Downstairs you will find desk spaces with overhead lamps and plug sockets, as well as soft seating, a standing desk space, and our rare books reading table.
This floor houses reference materials, oversize books, and books with classmarks beginning with H8, I, J, K, and L. There is also an iDiscover catalogue terminal and our exhibition display cases. See our digital exhibition archive webpage.
Old Library
Across the Glass Bridge walkway, accessible from Level 1, you will come to the Old Library. The Whipple Library collections were originally housed in this area of the building, along with another room, which has now become the Whipple Museum Learning Gallery.
This is where the classification scheme begins, covering books with classmarks beginning with A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H, as well as our print journals. Here you will find larger working spaces, comfortable seating, and two unlocked desktop computers where you can print in black and white for free!
Upstairs
The landing on Level 2 is home to our seasonal displays and recent acquisitions. Here you will also find recent issues of academic journals. Venturing upstairs from here will take you to further study spaces on Levels 3 and 4.
Level 3
This mezzanine level has ample desk space with overhead lamps and plug sockets. Here you will find books with classmarks beginning with M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, and W.
Level 4
Continuing upstairs from Level 3, you will reach the topmost level of the Library. This floor has further desk space with overhead lamps and plug sockets. It also features soft seating, including an armchair and bean bags.
The books on this level have classmarks beginning with W, X, and Y. Our Electronic Legal Deposit terminal can be found on a desk to the right of the stairs.
