The Whipple Library occupies part of the Department of History and Philosophy of Science on Free School Lane in the centre of Cambridge. The main entrance is shared with the Department and the Whipple Museum, and still bears the name of our predecessors, the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, above the door.

You can access the library via the main entrance Monday - Friday, 9.15am - 5pm (5.30pm during term time).
Out of hours access
During term we are open until 7pm. Access between 5.30pm and 7pm is via Richard Storey's Gate, on Pembroke Street.

This entrance is on a card access system. If you are a HPS student or staff member your university card will already be configured for access. If you would like to use the library between 5.30 and 7pm and you are not sure if your card will work, please ask at reception in the HPS Department (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm).
There is no access to the Whipple Library outside of our opening hours.
Step free access
There is step-free access to the library via the Whipple Museum's group entrance, by prior arrangement. If possible, please contact us in advance for assistance and to discuss any specific requirements. Library staff will be happy to help as far as possible.
Unfortunately step-free access is not typically available between 5 and 7pm.
