Whipple Library

Department of History and Philosophy of Science

All registered users may enter the library during opening hours to browse the collections, borrow books, and use our workspaces.

These services do not require advance booking.

What do I need to know before I arrive?

We have adapted our ways of working in line with public health guidance, including safety principles and the need for social distancing for both staff and users, so you may find aspects of your visit to the library unfamiliar.

Important notes:

  • Please do not come to the library if you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Entrance to the library is currently via the Richard Storey's Gate, off Pembroke Street, or via the HPS Department.
  • Please scan the NHS Test and Trace QR code on your way in.
  • In line with the overall University policy, we are still asking you to wear a face covering if you are able to. Risk assessments and safe occupancy levels have been completed on the assumption that most people will be wearing a face covering: we may need to revisit our assessment of the safety of face to face services if mask-wearing is not prevalent.
  • You will see safety measures including hand sanitiser points, sanitising wipes, and hand-washing facilities throughout the building.
  • iDiscover terminals to look up the classmarks of the material you are interested in are available, but you may wish to look these up ahead of your visit, or bring a mobile device with you.
  • If you need assistance with any aspect of your visit, please contact us ahead of time or speak to staff at the library front desk: we will be happy to help.
I need to pick up a click & collect order

Speak to staff at the front desk and give your name. Your books will be in a paper bag with your name on, and will already have been charged to your library account.

Please only arrive to collect books if you have received an email confirmation that your order is ready to collect. Normally we expect to have your books ready by the next working day.

I have a book to return

You can return books to the library front desk any time we are open, but please be aware that we have limited space and you may have to queue at busy times.

If the only reason for your visit is to return books, you can return them through the front door of the HPS Department on Free School Lane if you prefer.
