John Ray (1627-1705) was an English naturalist who published several systematic natural histories of animals. A note in the front of this copy indicates that it was previously owned by Gilbert White (1720-1793), naturalist and ornithologist. White made notes throughout the book, indicating when and where particular species could be seen on and around his estate in Selborne, Hampshire. A later owner of the book seems to have found this fact significant enough to make a note on the fly-leaf of all the places where White’s handwriting could be found.
